What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a statutorily regulated profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of structural and mechanical problems of the body and their effect on general health.

What does the treatment involve

Firstly an osteopath will take a detailed medical history, followed by a physical examination. They will take into account posture, movement, tender areas, stiffness or displacement. They may recommend further investigations such as

x-rays or scans if necessary.

Osteopaths use a wide variety of manual treatment methods. These may include soft tissue massage techniques, muscle and connective tissue stretching, repetitive stretching movements to improve joint mobility and high velocity thrust techniques which can cause a joint to click. Gentle release techniques are often used, particularly when treating children or elderly patients. An osteopath will use the gentlest techniques for the individual and therefore patients generally find treatment to be pleasant, soothing and relaxing.

The treatment programme may include advice on posture, diet, lifestyle or stress as these may have contributed to the problem. Patients will often be advised on specific exercises for their condition and other self-help methods to use at home.

At The Chichester Clinic, in order to respect privacy we supply female patients with modesty gowns. Also, patients are always welcome to bring a friend or relative into the treatment room if they would like.

We aim to relieve pain, improve mobility and help our patients get on with

their lives.
